Buggy: Hello, readers, and welcome to “Dropped!” With me is my good friend Chris, who will be joining me on a weekly journey through the Spring 2016 anime season as we figure out which shows are worth sticking with and which ones…aren’t.
Chris: Hello everyone. I just want to see that I am excited to see what the Spring 2016 season is going to have in store for us
B: Before we launch into things weekly, I figured it’d be a good idea to do a sort of pre-season runthrough of the shows, because, while we’re probably going to be giving almost every show a shot, there are some we aren’t for one reason or another, and since the point of Dropped! is to see how long all these shows can last, it’s only natural to include the ones that don’t even get a chance. But also because this allows us to give some of our first impressions, which, admittedly, could end up being very, very wrong.
C: Given how wrong we were with Rakugo, I’m honestly hoping wrong about a lot of shows that I have negative opinion on this season
B: Crazy, huh? I was expecting Phantom World to be my favorite show of the season and Rakugo to suck. But look where we are now.
Anyway, we’re using AniChart‘s list of shows to do this, so if you want more information on the shows you can check there. So shall we start at the beginning of the list?
C: Absolutely!
C: So first from Oriental Lights and Magic, a company I have never heard of, is the coming-of-age anime 12-sai.: Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki.
B: It looks like they usually work with other companies and have worked on shows like Berserk and Pokémon. Like, all of it.
C: I’m very curious about this show.
B: I’ve gotta say, 12-sai looks like it could actually be pretty good. I’m bullish on this one. The premise we’re being given seems like it’s the sort of show that treats the subject matter with respect, while staying cute and innocent. I could end up finding it dreadfully boring, but I’m optimistic.
C: There’s unfortunately not much information regarding the staff so I can’t any judgment calls there. Do you think it will be full-length or a short?
B: I think this one’s probably going to be full-length.

Sakura immediately becomes interested in motorcycles, and she and Onsa join the motorcycle club at the school. Then, Sakura sets out to get her license.
C: Next is Bakuon!! which is honestly what Rolling Girls probably should have been about.
B: This one does not look like it’s going to be my sort of thing.
C: You know what? I’m willing to give this one a shot.
…Oh wait. Fuck.
B: What?
C: The director is Junji Nishimura
B: Who?
C: This son of a bitch is responsible for the series composition of Glasslip, and was its director as well.
B: I’m not really a car guy, and the fact that it’s seinen with an all-girl cast doesn’t really give me great vibes either.
C: You got a point. And also it’s not card games on the motorcycles either

Title: Boku no Hero Academia
Alt Title: My Hero Academia
Studio: Bones
Source: Manga
Description: What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested extraordinary superpowers called “Quirks” at age four? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Becoming a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? U.A. High’s Hero Program of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?
Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn’t got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. High School for budding heroes, his life is looking more and more like a dead end. Then an encounter with All Might, the greatest hero of them all gives him a chance to change his destiny…
C: My Hero Academia, Andy!!!
B: DON’T WATCH AN ANIME CALLED BOKU!
No, that’s a joke. You should definitely be watching Boku no Hero Academia. It’s going to be huge. Like, it may end up being bigger than One Punch Man.
C: I’m surprised Funimation isn’t going all out with pushing this. Granted I did see an ad for it in my Skype banner earlier today
[Editor’s Note: It appears they’ve been pushing it a lot more since we had this discussion.]
C: I feel in love with Hero Academia the instant I started reading it and looks like the anime adaptation is going to be in good hands
B: There aren’t many times I know before a season starts that I know I’m going to be sticking with a show all the way through. This season there are several, and Hero Academia is the first. I’ve been enjoying the manga immensely, and I think BONES is a studio we can trust with it.
C: I just feel like Hero Academia embodies all the good elements of shonen. Lovable characters, intimidating villains, fantastic pacing and art, ample screen time for most of the characters, and it just leaves you wanting more each week.
B: I wouldn’t say I love it more than One Piece, but of the shonen I’ve read, it’s definitely my second-favorite. Can’t wait to see Best Girl Slippy-chan animated.
C: So since it hasn’t been announced yet, do you this show will be 2-cour? If so, do you think it will be a full length season, or do you think it will be something like Season 1 of Nisekoi where it’s 20 episodes since the Romeo & Juliet play was a good stopping point?
B: I’m thinking they’re going to go 26 episodes, but that’s just a guess. Not sure what they’d choose as an ending point, honestly. Maybe they’d try to condense it and make the fight with Stain the climax. I could see them really breezing through a lot of the early stuff.
C: I could really see the Stain arc being the climax since it shows an immense amount of change in Deku, Todoroki, and Iida and they could end it off with either showing all the villains on the move, or All Might talking about the origins of All for One.
B: But we’ll have plenty to say in the coming weeks since I’m pretty sure that, unless BONES messes something up royally, we’ll be sticking with it.
Buggy: Definitely watching
Chris: Definitely watching.
Title: Bungou Stray Dogs
Studio: Bones
Source: Manga
Description: Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They’re tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi’s future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!
C: Next is a show that apparently has gotten a fair deal of publicity in Japan (I think), Bungou Stray Dogs.
B: I’ve heard this one being mentioned a lot so I’m thinking that it’s one to keep an eye on. Then again, a lot of popular shows that get a lot of press end up being pretty bad. But from what I’ve seen of this, I’m…hesitantly optimistic.
C: I remember seeing this manga and thinking, I should check this out but I just never got around to it. The director has done a lot of older episodes of Sailor Moon, Soul Eater, and Captain Earth.
B: I’ll probably end up giving this one at least 2 or 3 episodes due to the hype. Could very well stick with it for all 12, though.
C: The man behind the series composition is also a Sailor Moon veteran and has worked on the script for Evangelion, Captain Earth, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Ouran Host Club, and FLCL.
B: Some very big names there.

Title: Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou – THE LAST SONG
Studio: Bones
Source: Original
Description: The stage is set in “another Japan” as a banquet of diverse superhumans unfolds…
In an imaginary “age of gods” about 20 years after the war, Japan has grown and developed by leaps and bounds. What if all the superhumans ever written about in fictional stories existed at the same time? Superhumans who came into existence through different circumstances, and who are special in different ways — Titans from outer space, lifeforms from a mystical world, phantoms and goblins from ancient times, cyborgs created by scientists, relics that rose out of the ruins of ancient civilizations, and the list goes on. One segment of these superhumans makes no secret of their existence and has gained popularity in society. Others cloak their identities and fight in secrecy.
There are enemies of superhumans as well, organizations that operate in the shadows.
The Japanese government has taken many measures to secure peace and order.
One is the establishment of an organization under the Ministry of Health and Welfare — the Overpopulation Research Laboratory, a.k.a. the Superhuman Bureau.
Their mission is to identify and approach suerhumans, then oversee and safeguard them. One member of the Superhuman Bureau, Jiro Hitoyoshi, is protagonist of this series.
C: The third Bones show this season.
B: This…does not bode well. Hopefully the show that gets shafted–or I suppose I should say boned–is Concrete Revolutio, as I dropped the first season and will not be watching the second.

B: Next up is some weird thing called “Gyakuten Saiban.” That name ring any bells for you?
C: I think he’s called something like Gryphon Scrawl over here.
B: I don’t know, apparently it’s a courtroom drama bout some guy called “Ryuuichi Naruhodou” and his spirit medium assistant. That sounds vaguely familiar to me for some weird reason.
C: But it’s by A-1 Pictures so they’re probably going to choke. And the director worked on, once again, your favorite series, KanoFlag.
B: …here I was leading up to this big Ace Attorney reveal and you’ve suddenly completely killed my enthusiasm. Still, I’ve played through the original Ace Attorney trilogy and I loved it, so I’m probably going to watch all of this, even if the adaptation stinks. Because honestly, I don’t have high hopes for it. I just hope they do the Matt Engarde case.
C: I’ll watch it because, well. It’s Phoenix Wright.
B: I’m curious how the licensed releases will handle how heavily the series has been localized.
C: “Eat your hamburger, Apollo.”

C: Choo choo muthafucka.
B: The Kabeneri train has no brakes.
C: This staff though.
Tetsurou Araki, director of all things unnessecarily gory
Ichiro Okouchu, writer of really silly shit
And Hiroyuki muthafuckin Sawano
B: Looking at the poster, I wanted to say “this looks reminiscent of Attack on Titan.” Well, guess what studio is responsible?
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is going to be the Kotaku Certified show of the season.
C: I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.
One more thing about it: No matter how terrible it may be, it will still have more to do about warfare on rails than Rail Wars did.
And if it is bad, this show is going to be the kind of bad that is just fucking majestic.
B: Attack on Titan wasn’t, though. Attack on Titan was just boring and edgy bad, not fantastically majestic bad.
C: Well that’s just the director and studio. Okouchi is responsible for Code Geass R2, Valvrave and (partially) Guilty Crown
And Kōtetsujō no Kabaneri has been picked up by…Amazon Prime?!?!
I have a feeling it might still be picked up by Funi
B: The Funi fans deserve it.
C: And Funi loves the stuff from Okouchi.
Also, even if the show is shit, the soundtrack is going to be awesome.

Title: Kuma Miko
Studio: Kinema Citrus
Source: Manga
Description: The story follows Machi, a middle school student who serves as a shrine maiden at a Shinto shrine enshrining a bear in the recesses of a certain mountain in Japan’s northern Touhoku region. Machi’s guardian is a talking bear named Natsu, and one day Machi says to Natsu, “I want to go to a school in the city.” The worrywart Natsu then gives Machi — who is ignorant in the ways of the world — a set of trials that she must pass in order to be able to survive in the city.
B: Kuma Miko actually looks pretty interesting. Seems like it could be fun.
C: Oh god it looks adorable. And it’s done by Kinema Citrus.
B: I can say with confidence that they are pretty good at cute things.
C: An interesting thing to note: this is the first anime to be directed by Kenichirou Matsuda who was primarily a VA.
B: That’s a crossover you don’t often see. You see a lot of directors who’ve worked as animators or writers, but voice actors? Not so much.
C: That’s very, very rare.

B: At least the director has some good stuff under his belt?
C: The only shining light is that it is directed by Tensai Okamura.
B: I have no opinions on this.

Title: Mayoiga
Alt Title: The Lost Village
Studio: Diomedea
Source: Original
Description: 30 young men and women who came together on a shady bus tour. The tour’s destination: an illusive, possibly nonexistent village called Nanakimura. In Nanakimura, one can lead a utopian existence, free of the world’s obstacles … or so it was rumored, like an urban legend.
“In despair over the real world … wanting to escape the tedious daily life … wanting to restart your life from scratch …”
The bus headed deep into the mountains, carrying 30 people each harboring their own expectations and wounds in their hearts…
And so, the place these 30 arrived at, was an uninhabited village with the lingering faint scents of life, even though it was falling apart.
What is the truth of Nanakimura facing the 30? You can’t miss even one episode!
B: We’re getting a lot of original anime this season, aren’t we?
C: Indeed, and I have hopes for this show.
B: The premise is legitimately intriguing.
C: Although the fact that it launching a crowdfunding campaign to help with production was…well interesting to say the least.
B: Crowdfunding is the future, man.
And hey, is that Mari Okada I see working on this?
C: Yup, that and Kiznaiver. Girl’s been busy
B: Okada’s kind of divisive as it is, so it’s hard to tell for sure whether this is going to be good or bad.
Though let’s be honest, Mayoiga’s animation studio leaves a bit to be desired.
KanColle looked fairly nice, I guess?
C: Back to the crowdfunding bit, what was concerning was that it was launched on February 29th. So all I can think is that something went horribly wrong. But hey, they did meet their $29,500 goal, so good for them.
B: I guess this is one to keep an eye on. As in keep it on your radar, but also look at it with a skeptical eye.

Title: Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?

Studio: Project No.9
Source: Light Novel
Description: The story centers on Hideki Nishimura, a young man who confessed to a person he thought was a girl online, only for that person to turn out to be a boy. He keeps this “black history” secret and swears to never to trust a “girl” online again. However, one day a girl online confesses to him, and it turns out she’s actually a beautiful girl named Ako Tamaki. Ako cannot tell the difference between the online world and reality, and she is a loner who has trouble communicating. Hideki and his friends from his guild decide to work together to “correct” her.
B: Up next is Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?
Can we just agree that this one will probably be shite and move on? Absolutely nothing about this is giving me any sort of hope.
C: Now now, you don’t -looks at staff-
Okay yeah.
Let’s move on.
Buggy: Watching. But very reluctantly.
Chris: Also watching reluctantly.
Title: Pan de Peace!
Studio: Asahi Production
Source: Manga
Description: The 4koma centers around Minami, an airheaded girl who is starting high school and who loves eating bread for breakfast. Baked goods bring happiness everyday to her and her classmates — the reliable Yuu, the pastry-baking Fuyumi, and the independent Noa.
B: Pan de Peace. A comedy about bread. I’m actually more curious about this than I probably should be.
C: So as a lover of carbs (at least anything that doesn’t have fructose in it) I cannot hate this concept and I applaud this girl’s devotion to it.
But as with anything that is a 4koma, I’d like to know what the length of the show is.
[Editor’s Note: this show has been confirmed as a short. We’ve left the discussion in the place it originally took place, however.]
B: It looks like it’ll just be cute girls doing cute things, but the girls look cute so I’m willing to give it a shot. There’s a good chance I’ll find the comedy a bit dull and move on after a few episodes, but it should be worth a look.
B: So tell me, Chris…what is your favorite type of Japanese bread? Melonpan? Yakisobapan?
Personally, my favorite would have to be shimapan. Dohohoho.

Studio: White Fox
Source: Light Novel
Description: In the story, Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favor, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.
C: Oh look Andy! It’s another light novel fantasy harem.
I feel like this might end up being a comedy.
B: The good news is that this series is directed by Watanabe.
The bad news is that it’s not Shinichiro Watanabe. Or even Shinichi “Nabeshin” Watanabe.
C: So funny thing about the one thing he has directed: I remember watching the first episode of Wakaba (STAR) Girl, but I remember absolutely fuck all about it.
B: Wakaba Asterisk Girl is all right.
This one might not actually be terrible. I know it’s a long shot, but it could end up a bit more Durarara and a bit less…well, most other light novels.
C: Masahiro Yokotani has written some decent stuff.
B: Since this is an LN adaptation, though, the big question is this: has Tappei Nagatsuki?

Title: Sakamoto desu ga?
Alt Title: Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
Studio: Studio Deen
Source: Manga
Description: First year high school student Sakamoto isn’t just cool, he’s the coolest! Almost immediately after starting school, he began attracting everyone’s attention. The girls love him, and most of the boys resent him. There’s even a boy in the class who works as a model, but who is constantly upstaged by Sakamoto! No matter what tricks the other boys try to play on him, Sakamoto always manages to foil them with ease and grace. Though Sakamoto may seem cool and aloof, he helps others when asked, such as in the case of the boy in his class who was being constantly bullied. No matter what difficulties Sakamoto encounters, he moves through his high school life with confidence and class!
C: It’s the first of 3 DEEN shows.
B: I’ve heard a lot of excitement for Sakamoto Desu Ga, and I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but…I think DEEN may be turning their reputation around.
C: -knock on wood-
I’ve read the first chapter and I like it.
B: And let’s point out that this is a comedy, a genre the director has worked on several very successful shows for. Daily Lives of High School Boys, School Rumble, Gintama…I think this one’s in good hands.
(I can’t believe I just said that about a DEEN show)
C: (I know right)

C: So this show isn’t really doing much for me.

Want to move on?
C: Yes please.

Title: Seisen Cerberus: Ryuukoku no Fatalité
Studio: Bridge
Source: Video Game
Description: The anime is set in a continent ruled by sword and magic called Kunaaan, where a power balance between the Holy Kingdom of Amoria, the Kingdom of Ishilfen, and the Vanrodis Kingdom keeps a peace so unstable that any tragedy that befalls any one kingdom will mean war for the entire continent. Another power, the evil dragon Daganzord, also resides on the continent, and no one is powerful enough to stop him from spreading destruction and charred land in his wake. Two individuals, Bairo and Kismitete, undertook a ritual alongside a party of wizards to seal Daganzord, but were foiled. This event was known thereafter as the Balbagoa Tragedy. Bairo and Kismitete’s son Hiiro is saved by Giiru, and Hiiro swears to avenge his parents’ deaths and trains himself with the sword. When Hiiro turns 16, he sets out on a journey to slay the dragon, and Giruu accompanies him, having no choice. Along the way, they meet many types of people, and gain companions on their journey.
B: I don’t have high hopes for this one.
C: The fact that it’s a video game adaptation really isn’t getting my hopes up.
B: The only staff I see attached to it right now is Hiroshi Ohnogi, who’s done some decent work…but video game adaptations are, by nature, a lot harder.
C: It’s especially difficult to compress a (what I am assuming is a) JRPG to 12-24 episodes.

Chihiro initially refuses, but when seeing the horribly dirty state of Madoka’s rich home, he decides to start cleaning it. Then Madoka makes another offer to Chihiro: that he comes to live with him, but in exchange Chihiro will do the housework. Chihiro accepts this deal, but suddenly finds himself in a maid uniform.
B: Two words, Chris: Gag. Me.
C: Well…at least he’s doing it of his own will.
Unlike a certain other show
B: I assume you mean Himegoto?
C: What else COULD I be talking about?
B: I really don’t want to watch the story of an orphaned crossdressing elementary school student produced by people known for ecchi.
I give this one maybe five minutes before it’s dropped in the trash where it belongs.
C: Yeah, I doubt I’ll be sticking with this one

B: Chris, do you happen to have a Band-Aid on you?
C: Did you cut yourself on the edge?
B: Just by looking at the image.
I think the manga for this just recently got brought over to the states.
C: Actually, looking at the first chapter, that edge might be a little duller than you thought, so suck it up Sparky. No Band-aid for you.
B: I sense this is going to be Kotaku Certified, but we’ll have to see.

B: Could be all right?
C: So I’m here thinking to myself, this could be a good show…
but it could be like KanoFlag and they keep throwing around “bad karma” but have no idea what it means.

C: Dude, I really need to finish the first season. It was a solid show
B: I didn’t even pick the first season up for some reason, and I’m regretting it now because that preview image looks metal as fuck.
I may actually end up going back and watching it, since I’ve heard pretty good things.
C: The reason was something along the lines of “It aired late and looked shonen as fuck, I’m not going to bother.”
B: I believe so, yeah. Whoops.
C: Shame on you
Buggy: I’ll need to watch S1.
Chris: I’ll get there eventually
B: Anyway, on to the shorts?
C: Sure, we can skim through them.
B: I’ll probably at least check most of these that aren’t sequels out, but there are a few that pique my interest.
C: Kagewani Season 2 yo!
B: I actually really liked Kagewani, so I’m pretty excited for a season 2.
C: Looks like Studio DEEN made a fourth show. They’re getting around this season
And hold the fuck up. How did we end up with a season where we have only two A-1 shows and 4 DEEN shows
B: Maybe they’re going all-out with Ace Attorney?
I hope it’s not Asterisk War they’re going all-out with.
Then there’s also Trigger’s short. I’m excited for this one.
C: I’m interested Luluco, Goma-chan looks cute, Onigiri looks stupid
B: I’m also a bit surprised that there’s a VN adaptation as a short.
C: So am I
B: As for movies and OVAs, the only thing I’m probably going to check out is Under the Dog since that one’s been so hyped.
C: Same here
B: Not the Yu-Gi-Oh movie?
But Chris, Yugi is battling Kaiba! No one’s ever seen that before! Don’t you want to see how that turns out?
C: Well that but I won’t be able to see it until it comes out on Blu-ray.
So technically it won’t be out until summer/fall so why talk about it during the spring season.
Also I can’t enter the contest to win a Exodia curry plate set SO WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT ANDY!
B: A curry plate? More like Exodia the intestine destroyer, amirite?
C: Ayyy.
But just imagine serving up curry and shouting “Exodia, OBLITERATE!
B: So now that we’ve gone through the whole list, let’s do one more thing. I want the 5 shows you’re most excited for, any shows you think you’ll drop after 1 episode or less, and your bet for dark horse of the season.
B: And to make it interesting…no Hero Academia or JoJo.
C: Dick
B: Sorry, but it’d be too easy.
B: Mine are Ace Attorney, Sakamoto Desu Ga, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumoto Kedaruge, Mayoiga, and Kiznaiver.
C: Excited: Stray Dogs, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (in hopes of it being a hot mess), Mayoiga, Kiznaiver, and Sakamoto.
And Kagewani.
Dropping: Big Order, Hundred, Netoge no Yome, Sansha Sanyou
B: I’ve got the same drop list, minus Big Order and plus Shounen Maid and Super Lovers.
C: Dark Horse: I’m debating between DJ Agetarou and 12-sai
B: Since you said those two, I think I’m going to say Flying Witch. I don’t think it’d be too much of a surprise if it were good, but I think it has potential to end up being a big hit despite the low hype. More of a Barakamon type of dark horse than a Rakugo one.
That, or Unhappy.
All right, this has ended up being pretty long, but I hope you’ve stuck with it. Join us when the season actually starts to see what we end up dropping each week and to see just how wrong these predictions were.
