Buggy: Hello, readers, and welcome to “Dropped!” With me is my good friend Chris, who will be joining me on a weekly journey through the Spring 2016 anime season as we figure out which shows are worth sticking with and which ones…aren’t.
Chris: Hello everyone. I just want to see that I am excited to see what the Spring 2016 season is going to have in store for us
B: Before we launch into things weekly, I figured it’d be a good idea to do a sort of pre-season runthrough of the shows, because, while we’re probably going to be giving almost every show a shot, there are some we aren’t for one reason or another, and since the point of Dropped! is to see how long all these shows can last, it’s only natural to include the ones that don’t even get a chance. But also because this allows us to give some of our first impressions, which, admittedly, could end up being very, very wrong.
C: Given how wrong we were with Rakugo, I’m honestly hoping wrong about a lot of shows that I have negative opinion on this season
B: Crazy, huh? I was expecting Phantom World to be my favorite show of the season and Rakugo to suck. But look where we are now.
Anyway, we’re using AniChart‘s list of shows to do this, so if you want more information on the shows you can check there. So shall we start at the beginning of the list?
C: So first from Oriental Lights and Magic, a company I have never heard of, is the coming-of-age anime 12-sai.: Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki.
B: It looks like they usually work with other companies and have worked on shows like Berserk and Pokémon. Like, all of it.
C: I’m very curious about this show.
B: I’ve gotta say, 12-sai looks like it could actually be pretty good. I’m bullish on this one. The premise we’re being given seems like it’s the sort of show that treats the subject matter with respect, while staying cute and innocent. I could end up finding it dreadfully boring, but I’m optimistic.
C: There’s unfortunately not much information regarding the staff so I can’t any judgment calls there. Do you think it will be full-length or a short?
B: I think this one’s probably going to be full-length.
Title: Aikatsu Stars!
Studio: Bandai Namco Pictures
Source: Video Game
Description: Aikatsu Stars! features the protagonist Yume Nijino. Yume aims to become a top idol, and she enrolls in the Yotsusei Gakuen. This academy has a special group called the S4, who are the top four active idols in the school. Yume and the other first-year students aim to become a part of the S4.
B: So this one’s not only a sequel, but an idol show. No interest in picking this one up.
C: Same here
Buggy: Not Watching
Chris: Not Watching
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Description: The story revolves around high school girls who discover the appeal of motorcycles. Sakura Hane is a high school student who looks a little bit like an airhead. On the way to her all-female high school one day, she is worn-out climbing a hilly road with a bicycle, but she sees a girl named Onsa Amano who is riding a motorcycle. Sakura immediately becomes interested in motorcycles, and she and Onsa join the motorcycle club at the school. Then, Sakura sets out to get her license.
C: Next is Bakuon!! which is honestly what Rolling Girls probably should have been about.
B: This one does not look like it’s going to be my sort of thing.
C: You know what? I’m willing to give this one a shot.
…Oh wait. Fuck.
C: The director is Junji Nishimura
C: This son of a bitch is responsible for the series composition of Glasslip, and was its director as well.
B: I’m not really a car guy, and the fact that it’s seinen with an all-girl cast doesn’t really give me great vibes either.
C: You got a point. And also it’s not card games on the motorcycles either
Title: Battle Spirits: Double Drive
Studio: Bandai Namco Pictures
Description: Shunta Mogami loves the Battle Spirits game. One day he is transported by a light from a Battle Spirits card to Spirits World, the origin of all Battle Spirits. He meets a girl named Eto, who claims to have summoned him to Spirits World in order to prevent its destruction at the hands of the revived Evil God-King, who once plotted the destruction of Spirits World before being defeated and sealed away. Together with the confident, green-deck-wielding Yoku Albatrosa, who also came from another world, Shunta sets out to find the twelve God-Kings whose power originally sealed the Evil God-King.
Title: Beyblade Burst
Studio: Oriental Light and Magic
Description: Bart Aoi is a hot-blooded kid who loves to attack and wields a Beyblade named Valkyrie. His close friend Shū Kurenai is an elite Blader who is a genius but still puts in a lot of effort, and wields the Beyblade named Spriggan.
B: So are either of us planning to watch either Battle Spirits: Double Drive or Beyblade Burst?
C: LET. IT. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP!!!!
No. No I am not.
B: Three words to describe both of those 2: Shonen. As. Fuck.
Buggy: Not Watching
Chris: Not Watching
Title: Big Order
Description: 10 years ago a child wished for the destruction of the world. Now a Group of people has the ability which grants their wishes depending on their power. They are called “Order User”.
Before these great people who has the power of “Order”, One person excels most, with the ability to rule and conquer the world and turned people into puppet when it is on his Jurisdiction, that power belongs to Hoshimiya Eiji, who is also responsible with the destructive phenomena happened exactly 10 years ago.
C: Next is….oh lovely. Big Order.
B: Are you familiar with this one?
C: It’s from the writer of Future Diary. It is not good.
B: Ah yes. I think I remember you mentioning this one, actually. Isn’t it gloriously ridiculous, though?
C: It started that way. I mean, there’s a character that is a piece of lumber in a trenchcoat. But then around chapter 20 it reached a point where it got mindnumbingly stupid.
B: Well, I still have hope that I will love it. Ironically, of course.
Title: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal – Death Busters-hen
Studio: Toei Animation
Description: Third cour of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal.
B: Oh, wow. Sailor Moon Crystal is still a thing?
C: I was surprised as well. But so long as it sells, it will continue to be made.
And this time we get the Sailor Lesbians.
B: I’ve heard that it’s going to cut back on the CG, at least. But I got one episode into Crystal last time and never watched the original series, so I’m not going to bother.
C: Yeah, I really don’t feel like trying to play catch up (Says the man who watched Digimon 02 twice in two weeks).
B: So shall we move on?
Title: Boku no Hero Academia
Alt Title: My Hero Academia
Description: What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested extraordinary superpowers called “Quirks” at age four? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Becoming a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? U.A. High’s Hero Program of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?
Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn’t got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. High School for budding heroes, his life is looking more and more like a dead end. Then an encounter with All Might, the greatest hero of them all gives him a chance to change his destiny…
C: My Hero Academia, Andy!!!
B: DON’T WATCH AN ANIME CALLED BOKU!
No, that’s a joke. You should definitely be watching Boku no Hero Academia. It’s going to be huge. Like, it may end up being bigger than One Punch Man.
C: I’m surprised Funimation isn’t going all out with pushing this. Granted I did see an ad for it in my Skype banner earlier today
[Editor’s Note: It appears they’ve been pushing it a lot more since we had this discussion.]
C: I feel in love with Hero Academia the instant I started reading it and looks like the anime adaptation is going to be in good hands
B: There aren’t many times I know before a season starts that I know I’m going to be sticking with a show all the way through. This season there are several, and Hero Academia is the first. I’ve been enjoying the manga immensely, and I think BONES is a studio we can trust with it.
C: I just feel like Hero Academia embodies all the good elements of shonen. Lovable characters, intimidating villains, fantastic pacing and art, ample screen time for most of the characters, and it just leaves you wanting more each week.
B: I wouldn’t say I love it more than One Piece, but of the shonen I’ve read, it’s definitely my second-favorite. Can’t wait to see Best Girl Slippy-chan animated.
C: So since it hasn’t been announced yet, do you this show will be 2-cour? If so, do you think it will be a full length season, or do you think it will be something like Season 1 of Nisekoi where it’s 20 episodes since the Romeo & Juliet play was a good stopping point?
B: I’m thinking they’re going to go 26 episodes, but that’s just a guess. Not sure what they’d choose as an ending point, honestly. Maybe they’d try to condense it and make the fight with Stain the climax. I could see them really breezing through a lot of the early stuff.
C: I could really see the Stain arc being the climax since it shows an immense amount of change in Deku, Todoroki, and Iida and they could end it off with either showing all the villains on the move, or All Might talking about the origins of All for One.
B: But we’ll have plenty to say in the coming weeks since I’m pretty sure that, unless BONES messes something up royally, we’ll be sticking with it.
Buggy: Definitely watching
Chris: Definitely watching.
Title: Bungou Stray Dogs
Description: Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They’re tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi’s future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!
C: Next is a show that apparently has gotten a fair deal of publicity in Japan (I think), Bungou Stray Dogs.
B: I’ve heard this one being mentioned a lot so I’m thinking that it’s one to keep an eye on. Then again, a lot of popular shows that get a lot of press end up being pretty bad. But from what I’ve seen of this, I’m…hesitantly optimistic.
C: I remember seeing this manga and thinking, I should check this out but I just never got around to it. The director has done a lot of older episodes of Sailor Moon, Soul Eater, and Captain Earth.
B: I’ll probably end up giving this one at least 2 or 3 episodes due to the hype. Could very well stick with it for all 12, though.
C: The man behind the series composition is also a Sailor Moon veteran and has worked on the script for Evangelion, Captain Earth, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Ouran Host Club, and FLCL.
B: Some very big names there.
Title: Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou – THE LAST SONG
Description: The stage is set in “another Japan” as a banquet of diverse superhumans unfolds…
In an imaginary “age of gods” about 20 years after the war, Japan has grown and developed by leaps and bounds. What if all the superhumans ever written about in fictional stories existed at the same time? Superhumans who came into existence through different circumstances, and who are special in different ways — Titans from outer space, lifeforms from a mystical world, phantoms and goblins from ancient times, cyborgs created by scientists, relics that rose out of the ruins of ancient civilizations, and the list goes on. One segment of these superhumans makes no secret of their existence and has gained popularity in society. Others cloak their identities and fight in secrecy.
There are enemies of superhumans as well, organizations that operate in the shadows.
The Japanese government has taken many measures to secure peace and order.
One is the establishment of an organization under the Ministry of Health and Welfare — the Overpopulation Research Laboratory, a.k.a. the Superhuman Bureau.
Their mission is to identify and approach suerhumans, then oversee and safeguard them. One member of the Superhuman Bureau, Jiro Hitoyoshi, is protagonist of this series.
C: The third Bones show this season.
B: This…does not bode well. Hopefully the show that gets shafted–or I suppose I should say boned–is Concrete Revolutio, as I dropped the first season and will not be watching the second.
C: I dropped it at about episode 6 so I won’t be watching it either. But I’m not surprised Bones is throwing 3 shows at us, the didn’t release anything for the Winter season.
Buggy: Not Watching
Chris: Not Watching
Title: Duel Masters VSRF
Description: The 12th Duel Masters series.
B: So. Duel Masters RSVP?
C: I could never get on board with Duel Masters when it came over here. Aside from a (horribly dated) gag dub, I had no clue what was going on because I don’t recall them ever explaining the rules and it focused very heavily on those duels.
B: I don’t even know anything about the series. I see “Duel Masters” and I think “okay, is this one Beyblade or Yu-Gi-Oh?”
C: It’s like some hybrid of Yu-gi-oh and Magic.
B: Isn’t Yu-gi-oh already a hybrid of Yu-gi-oh and Magic?
B: Needless to say I won’t be watching it.
Buggy: Not Watching
Chris: Not Watching
Studio: Brains Base
Description: The story is set on Endra, an unknown world beneath the surface of Earth itself. It is another world, where the giant Adamas shines above and seven-colored bands drift across the skies.
One day, Shun Asanaga — an ordinary yet positive and bright 15-year-old middle school boy who lived in the “Land Above” — lands in this place. He had discovered a mysterious crystal at his scientific businessman father’s company, and the moment he touched the crystal, he was transported to Endra.
He meets Prince Emirio, who strongly despises the current King Deruzain and had just turned 16 at Endra’s castle. He became of age to ascend to the throne, and he wields a weapon to seek his vengeance at last, but the difference in strength proves to be insurmountable. Captured and imprisoned by Deruzain, Emirio is heartbroken. But then, the walls of the prison suddenly become distorted, and Shun appears within them.
Two youths live in Endra — one to return his former world, and one to exact revenge. The future that is within the grasp of two youths raised in different worlds…
B: Oh boy. Long descriptions always make me a bit wary.
C: So, Touko Machida, the series composer.
B: Not really stoked on her resume.
C: She was responsible for the series composition of Lucky Star, and the clusterfucks that are Amnesia, Hamatora, and DRAMAtical Murder
B: I suspect I’ll get maybe 3 episodes into this show tops before I reach the end of my ride.
C: (Ba-dum tsh)
I also have this gut feeling this show is going to be… what’s the word I’m looking for?
B: I don’t know. What is the word you’re looking for?
Title: flying witch
Studio: J.C. Staff
Description: Aomori, Japan.
In a land blessed by nature’s bountiful beauty, bizarre things begin to take place. Makoto Kowata, 15 years old, is a professional witch. She left Yokohama with Chito, her black cat, to live in the house of her relatives in Aomori. This is where she begins to train as a witch.
Even though Makoto’s powers are still limited to just flying through the sky, she and her second cousins Kei and Chinatsu surely make the most out of each and every day.
C: After my experience with Glasslip, I don’t trust this description. She’s not gonna fly, is she Andy?
B: I’m actually optimistic about this one.
C: So am I
B: The premise sounds good enough, JC Staff’s made some decent work, and the series composition has some good shows under her belt, especially in recent years.
…And also BlazBlue
But Noragami? Mysterious Girlfriend X? Snow White with the Red Hair? I think this one will be all right.
C: The witch better fly though!!!
Name: Future Card Buddyfight DDD
Description: The third Future Card Buddyfight TV series.
B: Future Card Buddyfight DDD?
C: I’m not going to accept any of the Ds they are trying to give me
B: I’m glad they’re bringing Crusty back for this season.
(That was a Log Horizon joke)
C: I am aware
B: You know anything about Future Card Buddyfight?
C: It’s a card game. And buddies fight?
B: Why are there so many shonen card game shows, Chris?
C: Because they make (or at least try to make) money, Andy.
B: Well, no matter how many generic bad shonen card game anime we get, we can at least rest in peace knowing one thing: At least they’re all still better than Yu-gi-oh.
C: You’re looking to pick a fight with me, aren’t you?
Title: Gakusen Toshi Asterisk 2
Alt Title: The Asterisk War 2
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Source: Light Novel
Description: Second season of Gakusen Toshi Asterisk.
B: Speaking of things that are bad, they’re putting out a second season of The Asterisk War.
C: Yeah, I may have supported it for the first few episodes but I kind of just lost interest. I did like its OP, however.
B: I can’t wait to see Digibro continue to forgo actual thoughtful analysis in favor of masturbating furiously to how much he hates the show and A-1 Pictures in general.
Buggy: Not Watching
Chris: Not Watching
Title: Gyakuten Saiban
Alt Title: Ace Attorney
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Source: Visual Novel
Description: CAPCOM announced at a stage event at Tokyo Game Show on Thursday that its Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) courtroom battle game franchise is getting a TV anime adaptation that will premiere in Japan in April 2016.
B: Next up is some weird thing called “Gyakuten Saiban.” That name ring any bells for you?
C: I think he’s called something like Gryphon Scrawl over here.
B: I don’t know, apparently it’s a courtroom drama bout some guy called “Ryuuichi Naruhodou” and his spirit medium assistant. That sounds vaguely familiar to me for some weird reason.
C: But it’s by A-1 Pictures so they’re probably going to choke. And the director worked on, once again, your favorite series, KanoFlag.
B: …here I was leading up to this big Ace Attorney reveal and you’ve suddenly completely killed my enthusiasm. Still, I’ve played through the original Ace Attorney trilogy and I loved it, so I’m probably going to watch all of this, even if the adaptation stinks. Because honestly, I don’t have high hopes for it. I just hope they do the Matt Engarde case.
C: I’ll watch it because, well. It’s Phoenix Wright.
B: I’m curious how the licensed releases will handle how heavily the series has been localized.
C: “Eat your hamburger, Apollo.”
B: I really, really want this to be good, though. Ace Attorney has a great story, but it’s one that takes a bit of effort to adapt. Like I said, though, I’ll stick with it until the bitter end. Any, uh, “objections” to that stance, Chris?
C: HOLD IT!!
It’s worth bringing up that the series composer is has a very interesting resume, having worked on the Pokémon franchise since the beginning, as well as Yu-gi-oh 5Ds (one of the better Yu-gi-oh series), Trinity Blood, and Samurai 7.
…and Blade & Soul and Tribe Cool Crew.
Title: Hai Furi
Studio: Production IMS
Description: “In the sea we live, the sea we protect, and by the sea we go.”
Japan, 100 years after plate subductions caused many other countries to be submerged. To save the remaining countries, the coastal cities that had been built up were launched into the seas, and the seaborne routes between them expanded. With this expansion, a need for personnel that could safeguard the seas arose. Women began to seek employment in this new industry, and soon, the “Blue Mermaids,” those who keep the sea safe, began to be a source of admiration for many. The childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China sought to become Blue Mermaids themselves, and together with others who shared their dream, they enrolled in Yokosuka’s Marine High School.
B: This one looks cute, but probably won’t be very good.
C: While the director has little to no experience, Reiko Yoshida (series composition) is a Digimon veteran: writing several episodes for Adventure and 02, the first 4 movies, and the best portion of Xros Wars/Fusion. Outside of that though, her quality of work fluctuates.
B: I don’t really expect much.
C: I’m going to give it an open-minded shot.
Studio: Production IMS
Source: Light Novel
Description: The story begins with the Hundred, the only weapon that can counter the mysterious Savage life form attacking Earth. To become a Slayer (master of military arts) who wields this Hundred, the main character Hayato Kisaragi successfully enrolls in the marine academy city ship Little Garden. However …
“I wanted to meet you, Hayato!!”
“W–who are you…?”
Hayato feels a strange yet familiar sense of incongruity towards Emil Crossford, his roommate who somehow knows him from somewhere. On top of that, as soon as he enters the school, he is challenged to a duel by the “Queen” (the school’s most powerful Slayer) Claire Harvey!
C: Oh goody. A light novel adaptation.
B: I see “Light Novel.” I see one guy and a lot of girls, one with very prominent boobs. I see western names.
Hundred? More like zero, amirite?
B: I suspect I won’t even make it through an episode.
C: Boy enters academy? Check.
Girls with western names the sound a little silly? Check.
Has to battle the alledged best girl in the school? Check.
B: I’m surprised A-1 pictures didn’t pick this one up.
Let’s not dwell on Hundred, though.
Title: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai
Alt Title: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Studio: David Production
Description: The official website and twitter account for the JoJo anime announced an anime adaptation of Part 4 of JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken.
Part 4 focuses on Josuke Higashikata, the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar, with Jotaro Kujo and Joseph Joestar along in a supporting role.
B: Hey. Hey Chris. Chris.
C: Yes Andy?
B: SONO CHI NO SADAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
C: I am rewatching the teaser as we talk about this.
B: MOTHERFUCKIN’ JOJO
C: I am so hyped.
B: This is the third of the shows this season that I know I’ll be sticking with (the other two being Hero Academia and Ace Attorney), and it’s the one I’m most excited about. I’m excited to see Hero Academia animated, but I know the story. I’m hesitant to see Ace Attorney animated, but I trust the story. But Diamond is Unbreakable? I know virtually nothing about it beyond a few of the characters and the fact that it’s one of the most well-regarded parts of JoJo.
C: I know a lot of people rip on the animation for not being the highest quality but could you honestly see anyone other than David Production working on this show?
B: I don’t think high quality animation is the point of JoJo.
C: The show just needs to retain the amount of over-the-top charm that the manga has
B: I don’t want to spend too much time on JoJo since I know I’ll be hyping it every single week once it starts airing. It’s JoJo, man. Motherfuckin’ JoJo. ‘Nuff said.
Buggy: Motherfuckin’ JoJo
Chris: Motherfuckin’ JoJo
Title: Joker Game
Studio: Production I.G.
Description: In 1937, before World War II begins in earnest. Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki of the Imperial Japanese Army forms the “D Agency,” an army intelligence outfit under his command and tutelage. Army General Staff attaches Lieutenant Sakuma to observe the unit’s performance. D Agency casts a wide net to find agents beyond Japanese military personnel, and Yuuki establishes D Agency’s tenets, which go against IJA doctrine: “Don’t kill, don’t get killed, don’t get captured.” With this, Yuuki trains a team of operatives who conduct missions against domestic and foreign powers.
B: Tell me, Chris, how exactly did you get those scars?
C: My father was a drinker and fiend
and one night
I pissed off a cat and it really fucked me up.
B: This one seems to be about political intrigue of some sort, which could be really fascinating. Although I can tell you right now, I’m going to start snickering every time they say “D Agency.”
C: Same. What few followers I have on Twitter are going to hate me. But I’m willing to give this one a go.

Name: Kamiwaza Wanda
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Description: The story is set in a world where every event has been turned into programs, and mysterious monsters known as “Promin” maintain the world. However, many Promin who have turned into bugs known as “Bugmin” are responsible for many of the world’s real-life bugs. Left alone, they may eventually turn into a big problem. The boy Yūto encounters the space dog Wanda, and the pair use a camera-like device and key items to capture Bugmin. Promin themselves are able to do things like “accelerate objects,” “spew fire,” or “create objects,” through an ability known as “Kamiwaza” (miracle), and are able to fend off Bugmin with it. At first, the Bugmin only cause small, bothersome things, but it will soon elevate into a global scale threat. Can one boy and one dog save the world?
C: So Kamiwaza Wanda…
It probably won’t matter to you since Funi and CR don’t usually pick up kids shows.
B: I would say “I’ll give this one a pass,” but the fact that it involves things called “Bugmin” and there are friends who refer to me as “bug man” kind of makes we want to at least give the first episode a go.
C: I just dread that either the kid or the dog is going to annoy the hell out of me. It is an interesting concept though.
Buggy: Maybe I’ll try it
Chris: Sure, why not?

What is Laplace’s Box? What are the secrets that it holds? For the first time in 100 years, light will shine on the darkest secrets of the Universal Century…
B: Hey, there’s yet another Gumdam series coming out. Again.
C: Because they apparently couldn’t just combine Iron-Blooded Orphans into one full 4-cour series
B: IBO is the only Gundam I’ve ever watched, and this one looks like it has Continuity(TM) so I’m not going to touch it. You’ve seen a bit more Gundam, right Chris? You planning on picking it up?
Buggy: Not watching
Chris: Maybe watching
Description: The fictional Japanese city named Sugomori City is built on reclaimed land. But as the years go by, the city’s population is decreasing. One day, Sonosaki tells her classmate Katsuhira: “You have been selected to be a Kiznaiver.” The Kizuna System, which allows Katsuhira to share his wounds, connects him to the classmates whose lives and personalities completely differ from his. The Kizuna System is an incomplete system for the implementation of world peace that connects people through wounds. All those who are connected to this system are called Kiznaivers. When one Kiznaiver is wounded, the system divides and transmits the wound among the other Kiznaivers.
B: I have no clue what to expect from this one.
C: Neither do I since I can’t wrap my head around the synopsis.
B: It’s a Mari Okada show done by Trigger. This is not something I was expecting.
Especially since the premise makes it sound like it’ll be really angsty, which is not something Trigger is known for.
C: I find it best not to deeply ponder what’s in store for me in a Trigger show.
B: My prediction? It’s either going to be absolutely fantastic or a terrible trainwreck.
C: A trainwreck?
C: But Andy, it’s the next show that has trains.
B: Are you segue-ing?
Title: Koutetsujou no Kabaneri
Alt Title: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Studio: Wit Studio
Description: As the world is in the middle of an industrial revolution, a monster appears that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced. By infecting humans with its bite, the monster can create aggressive and undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have built stations to shelter themselves from these creatures. People access the station, as well as transport wares between them, with the help of a locomotive running on steam, called Hayajiro. Ikoma, a boy who lives in the Aragane station and helps to build Hayajiro, creates his own weapon called Tsuranukizutsu in order to defeat the creatures. One day, as he waits for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets a girl named Mumei, who is excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikuma meets Mumei again as he sees Hayajiro going out of control. The staff on the locomotive has turned into the creatures. The station, now under attack by Kabane, is the opportunity Ikoma has been looking for.
B: Okay, Koutetsujou no Kabeneri.
C: Choo choo muthafucka.
B: The Kabeneri train has no brakes.
C: This staff though.
Tetsurou Araki, director of all things unnessecarily gory
Ichiro Okouchu, writer of really silly shit
And Hiroyuki muthafuckin Sawano
B: Looking at the poster, I wanted to say “this looks reminiscent of Attack on Titan.” Well, guess what studio is responsible?
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is going to be the Kotaku Certified show of the season.
C: I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.
One more thing about it: No matter how terrible it may be, it will still have more to do about warfare on rails than Rail Wars did.
And if it is bad, this show is going to be the kind of bad that is just fucking majestic.
B: Attack on Titan wasn’t, though. Attack on Titan was just boring and edgy bad, not fantastically majestic bad.
C: Well that’s just the director and studio. Okouchi is responsible for Code Geass R2, Valvrave and (partially) Guilty Crown
And Kōtetsujō no Kabaneri has been picked up by…Amazon Prime?!?!
I have a feeling it might still be picked up by Funi
B: The Funi fans deserve it.
C: And Funi loves the stuff from Okouchi.
Also, even if the show is shit, the soundtrack is going to be awesome.

Description: The story follows Machi, a middle school student who serves as a shrine maiden at a Shinto shrine enshrining a bear in the recesses of a certain mountain in Japan’s northern Touhoku region. Machi’s guardian is a talking bear named Natsu, and one day Machi says to Natsu, “I want to go to a school in the city.” The worrywart Natsu then gives Machi — who is ignorant in the ways of the world — a set of trials that she must pass in order to be able to survive in the city.
B: Kuma Miko actually looks pretty interesting. Seems like it could be fun.
C: Oh god it looks adorable. And it’s done by Kinema Citrus.
B: I can say with confidence that they are pretty good at cute things.
C: An interesting thing to note: this is the first anime to be directed by Kenichirou Matsuda who was primarily a VA.
B: That’s a crossover you don’t often see. You see a lot of directors who’ve worked as animators or writers, but voice actors? Not so much.
C: That’s very, very rare.
Studio: P.A. Works
Description: An original anime by studio P.A. Works in celebration of the studio’s 15th anniversary. It will debut in 2016.
C: So we got no synopsis, no preview video, and it’s by the guy who wrote the adaptation to Another.
B: At least the director has some good stuff under his belt?
C: The only shining light is that it is directed by Tensai Okamura.
B: I have no opinions on this.
Title: Kyoukai no Rinne 2

Title: Macross Δ (Macross Delta)
Description: Macross Δ (Macross Delta) is set eight years after the events of Macross F.
Title: Magi: Sinbad no Bokuen
Description: The official website for the manga Magi: Sinbad no Bouken announced a TV anime adaptation.
B: Next we have a sequel, a sequel, and a spinoff. You going to be watching any of these?
C: Nope, nope, and nope.
Buggy: Not watching, not watching, not watching
Chris: Nope, nope, and nope
Alt Title: The Lost Village
Description: 30 young men and women who came together on a shady bus tour. The tour’s destination: an illusive, possibly nonexistent village called Nanakimura. In Nanakimura, one can lead a utopian existence, free of the world’s obstacles … or so it was rumored, like an urban legend.
“In despair over the real world … wanting to escape the tedious daily life … wanting to restart your life from scratch …”
The bus headed deep into the mountains, carrying 30 people each harboring their own expectations and wounds in their hearts…
And so, the place these 30 arrived at, was an uninhabited village with the lingering faint scents of life, even though it was falling apart.
What is the truth of Nanakimura facing the 30? You can’t miss even one episode!
B: We’re getting a lot of original anime this season, aren’t we?
C: Indeed, and I have hopes for this show.
B: The premise is legitimately intriguing.
C: Although the fact that it launching a crowdfunding campaign to help with production was…well interesting to say the least.
B: Crowdfunding is the future, man.
And hey, is that Mari Okada I see working on this?
C: Yup, that and Kiznaiver. Girl’s been busy
B: Okada’s kind of divisive as it is, so it’s hard to tell for sure whether this is going to be good or bad.
Though let’s be honest, Mayoiga’s animation studio leaves a bit to be desired.
KanColle looked fairly nice, I guess?
C: Back to the crowdfunding bit, what was concerning was that it was launched on February 29th. So all I can think is that something went horribly wrong. But hey, they did meet their $29,500 goal, so good for them.
B: I guess this is one to keep an eye on. As in keep it on your radar, but also look at it with a skeptical eye.
Title: Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?
Alt Title: And you thought there is never a girl online?
Studio: Project No.9
Source: Light Novel
Description: The story centers on Hideki Nishimura, a young man who confessed to a person he thought was a girl online, only for that person to turn out to be a boy. He keeps this “black history” secret and swears to never to trust a “girl” online again. However, one day a girl online confesses to him, and it turns out she’s actually a beautiful girl named Ako Tamaki. Ako cannot tell the difference between the online world and reality, and she is a loner who has trouble communicating. Hideki and his friends from his guild decide to work together to “correct” her.
B: Up next is Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?
Can we just agree that this one will probably be shite and move on? Absolutely nothing about this is giving me any sort of hope.
C: Now now, you don’t -looks at staff-
Let’s move on.
Buggy: Watching. But very reluctantly.
Chris: Also watching reluctantly.
Title: Pan de Peace!
Studio: Asahi Production
Description: The 4koma centers around Minami, an airheaded girl who is starting high school and who loves eating bread for breakfast. Baked goods bring happiness everyday to her and her classmates — the reliable Yuu, the pastry-baking Fuyumi, and the independent Noa.
B: Pan de Peace. A comedy about bread. I’m actually more curious about this than I probably should be.
C: So as a lover of carbs (at least anything that doesn’t have fructose in it) I cannot hate this concept and I applaud this girl’s devotion to it.
But as with anything that is a 4koma, I’d like to know what the length of the show is.
[Editor’s Note: this show has been confirmed as a short. We’ve left the discussion in the place it originally took place, however.]
B: It looks like it’ll just be cute girls doing cute things, but the girls look cute so I’m willing to give it a shot. There’s a good chance I’ll find the comedy a bit dull and move on after a few episodes, but it should be worth a look.
B: So tell me, Chris…what is your favorite type of Japanese bread? Melonpan? Yakisobapan?
Personally, my favorite would have to be shimapan. Dohohoho.
Title: PriPara 3rd Season
Studio: Tatsunoko Productions
Description: The official website for the PriPara television anime series revealed that the anime is getting a third season that will premiere in April 2016.
B: Pripara. I didn’t watch the first seasons of this, so I’m not PriPara-d to watch the 3rd.
C: …Sometimes, Andy, I hate you with every fiber of my being.
Buggy: Not watching
Chris: Not watching
Title: Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
Alt Title: Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
Studio: White Fox
Source: Light Novel
Description: In the story, Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favor, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.
C: Oh look Andy! It’s another light novel fantasy harem.
I feel like this might end up being a comedy.
B: The good news is that this series is directed by Watanabe.
The bad news is that it’s not Shinichiro Watanabe. Or even Shinichi “Nabeshin” Watanabe.
C: So funny thing about the one thing he has directed: I remember watching the first episode of Wakaba (STAR) Girl, but I remember absolutely fuck all about it.
B: Wakaba Asterisk Girl is all right.
This one might not actually be terrible. I know it’s a long shot, but it could end up a bit more Durarara and a bit less…well, most other light novels.
C: Masahiro Yokotani has written some decent stuff.
B: Since this is an LN adaptation, though, the big question is this: has Tappei Nagatsuki?
Title: Sakamoto desu ga?
Alt Title: Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
Studio: Studio Deen
Description: First year high school student Sakamoto isn’t just cool, he’s the coolest! Almost immediately after starting school, he began attracting everyone’s attention. The girls love him, and most of the boys resent him. There’s even a boy in the class who works as a model, but who is constantly upstaged by Sakamoto! No matter what tricks the other boys try to play on him, Sakamoto always manages to foil them with ease and grace. Though Sakamoto may seem cool and aloof, he helps others when asked, such as in the case of the boy in his class who was being constantly bullied. No matter what difficulties Sakamoto encounters, he moves through his high school life with confidence and class!
C: It’s the first of 3 DEEN shows.
B: I’ve heard a lot of excitement for Sakamoto Desu Ga, and I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but…I think DEEN may be turning their reputation around.
C: -knock on wood-
I’ve read the first chapter and I like it.
B: And let’s point out that this is a comedy, a genre the director has worked on several very successful shows for. Daily Lives of High School Boys, School Rumble, Gintama…I think this one’s in good hands.
(I can’t believe I just said that about a DEEN show)
C: (I know right)
Title: Sansha Sanyou
Alt Title: Three Leaves, Three Colors
Description: The comedy manga follows the everyday life of three very different high school students. Futaba Odagiri is incredibly energetic but is also a glutton. Teru Hayama looks like an angel but she is really a demonic class president. Youko Nishikawa is the daughter of family that used to be a member of the upper class, but after her father’s company went bankrupt, they became poor.
C: So this show isn’t really doing much for me.
B: I’m pretty sure I’m not going to like this one. I’ve only just read the description and the gags feel tired already.
Want to move on?
C: Yes please.
Title: Seisen Cerberus: Ryuukoku no Fatalité
Source: Video Game
Description: The anime is set in a continent ruled by sword and magic called Kunaaan, where a power balance between the Holy Kingdom of Amoria, the Kingdom of Ishilfen, and the Vanrodis Kingdom keeps a peace so unstable that any tragedy that befalls any one kingdom will mean war for the entire continent. Another power, the evil dragon Daganzord, also resides on the continent, and no one is powerful enough to stop him from spreading destruction and charred land in his wake. Two individuals, Bairo and Kismitete, undertook a ritual alongside a party of wizards to seal Daganzord, but were foiled. This event was known thereafter as the Balbagoa Tragedy. Bairo and Kismitete’s son Hiiro is saved by Giiru, and Hiiro swears to avenge his parents’ deaths and trains himself with the sword. When Hiiro turns 16, he sets out on a journey to slay the dragon, and Giruu accompanies him, having no choice. Along the way, they meet many types of people, and gain companions on their journey.
B: I don’t have high hopes for this one.
C: The fact that it’s a video game adaptation really isn’t getting my hopes up.
B: The only staff I see attached to it right now is Hiroshi Ohnogi, who’s done some decent work…but video game adaptations are, by nature, a lot harder.
C: It’s especially difficult to compress a (what I am assuming is a) JRPG to 12-24 episodes.
Buggy: Watching, probably?
Title: Shounen Maid
Description: The manga revolves around Chihiro Komiya, an energetic elementary school student who was living with his mom. Chihiro is very good at doing housework and chores, and his mother’s motto is “No work, no food.” After his mother suddenly dies, a man named Madoka Taketori who claims to be his uncle shows up, and asks Chihiro to come live with him. Chihiro initially refuses, but when seeing the horribly dirty state of Madoka’s rich home, he decides to start cleaning it. Then Madoka makes another offer to Chihiro: that he comes to live with him, but in exchange Chihiro will do the housework. Chihiro accepts this deal, but suddenly finds himself in a maid uniform.
B: Two words, Chris: Gag. Me.
C: Well…at least he’s doing it of his own will.
Unlike a certain other show
B: I assume you mean Himegoto?
C: What else COULD I be talking about?
B: I really don’t want to watch the story of an orphaned crossdressing elementary school student produced by people known for ecchi.
I give this one maybe five minutes before it’s dropped in the trash where it belongs.
C: Yeah, I doubt I’ll be sticking with this one
Buggy: Watching, though probably not for long
Chris: Watching, though probably not for much longer
Title: Sousei no Onmyouji
Alt Title: Twin Star Exorcists
Studio: Studio Pierrot
Description: Rokuro dreams of becoming anything but an exorcist! Then mysterious Benio turns up. The pair are dubbed the “Twin Star Exorcists” and learn they are fated to marry…
Can Rokuro escape both fates?
When Rokuro’s best friend Ryogo goes missing, Rokuro is forced to ask Benio for help to enter Magano, the realm of the evil Kegare, to rescue him!
B: Chris, do you happen to have a Band-Aid on you?
C: Did you cut yourself on the edge?
B: Just by looking at the image.
I think the manga for this just recently got brought over to the states.
C: Actually, looking at the first chapter, that edge might be a little duller than you thought, so suck it up Sparky. No Band-aid for you.
B: I sense this is going to be Kotaku Certified, but we’ll have to see.
C: It’s Studio Pierrot, Kotaku loves their stuff.
B: So do you have anything else on this one?
C: Nah, I feel if I drop it, it will be after 3 episodes
Title: SUPER LOVERS
Studio: Studio Deen
Description: A high school boy named Haru and his mother are living overseas. His mother orders him to take care of and “civilize” his adoptive brother Ren, a wild young boy who dislikes talking with other people. While their relationship is adversarial at first, they grow closer as they begin to understand one another.
C: Yes Andy, I know.
You’ve been looking forward to this show since it was announced.
C: There is just…all sorts of uncomfortable skeeviness was this one.
C: Judging by the preview image, I refuse to believe that Haru is in high school, and I refuse to believe that this age gap is legal.
C: To translate Andy’s screaming for our readers at home: “Best Show of 2016.”
Chris: Watching. But just for the sake of giving everything a chance.
Title: Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge
Studio: Silver Link
Description: Tanaka who is a high school student simply is a slacker and does not want to do anything at all. He loves to sleep during classes and prefers not moving to save energy. One day he meets his classmate, Ota who is exactly the opposite. Ota is energetic and leader in class. He becomes friends with Tanaka and tries to make him start moving. Based on a popular comic from Nozomi Uda.
C: -reads the description-
A slacker meets an energetic girl? Hold onto your hats, things are going to get zany!
B: Listening to the description and looking at the poster, this sounds like it might have the makings of a really good ensemble cast comedy. I think this is going to be a good one.
C: I’m willing to give it a shot
Title: TERRAFORMARS REVENGE
Description: The sequel to the anime “Terra Formars” which adapts the manga by the same name.
With Earth becoming increasingly overpopulated, an ambitious plan has been put into place to terraform Mars using mold and cockroaches. Nearly 500 years after the plan, a mission to Mars, Annex 1, is under way to accomplish crucial research into the Virus currently plaguing mankind with the crew members who’ve been injected with various DNA of life on Earth in order to combat the Terraformars, giant humanoid cockroaches.
C: The TV censors are gonna have their work cut out for them.
B: I’m in a weird spot here. I didn’t like the first season all that much, but I did watch it to the end so I could continue with this one if I want. I just don’t know if I will yet.
RIP in peace, Hitler-chan ;_;
The manga right now has just reached a point where I can no longer muster up the will to care about the story, I’m just in it for the gore. Because sometimes you just need a good gory romp
B: I may end up watching at least some of it just for Michelle and Russian Joestar Crab Guy.
C: God bless Asimov
Buggy: Maybe watching
Chris: Not watching
Title: Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou
Studio: Studio Deen
Description: The manga follows Agetarou Katsumata, a stupid but honest guy whose family has run a tonkatsu restaurant for three generations. He’s also a beginner club DJ.
B: …Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou.
C: DEEN’s 3rd show.
Not sure what to think. I mean the main character sounds likable so the show has that going for them.
B: I…don’t have words. It could be good, though!
We laughed at “Ping Pong: the Animation” before it came out and everyone realized it was actually fantastic!
C: Actually I was down for that one from the beginning.
B: Good for you, you fucking hipster.
C: I did laugh at the title though.
Alt Title: Anne-Happy
Studio: Silver Link
Description: The story centers around class 1-7 of Tennogofune Academy, where all the students with “bad karma” or misfortune seem to have been gathered. Hibari, a student in this class, meets the unlucky Hanako and the perennially unhealthy Botan on her first day of school, and together they try to find a way to turn their school life into a happy one.
B: So. Unhappy?
C: Sure, let’s talk about Unhappy(NOTE).
B: Could be all right?
C: So I’m here thinking to myself, this could be a good show…
but it could be like KanoFlag and they keep throwing around “bad karma” but have no idea what it means.
B: I don’t think it’ll be any sort of supernatural element.
C: Regardless, I’m willing to go into this show with an open mind
B: I’m not excited for it, but I don’t think it’ll be an awful flop.
Title: Ushio and Tora 2
Description: The second season of Ushio to Tora.
C: Dude, I really need to finish the first season. It was a solid show
B: I didn’t even pick the first season up for some reason, and I’m regretting it now because that preview image looks metal as fuck.
I may actually end up going back and watching it, since I’ve heard pretty good things.
C: The reason was something along the lines of “It aired late and looked shonen as fuck, I’m not going to bother.”
B: I believe so, yeah. Whoops.
C: Shame on you
Buggy: I’ll need to watch S1.
Chris: I’ll get there eventually
B: Anyway, on to the shorts?
C: Sure, we can skim through them.
B: I’ll probably at least check most of these that aren’t sequels out, but there are a few that pique my interest.
C: Kagewani Season 2 yo!
B: I actually really liked Kagewani, so I’m pretty excited for a season 2.
C: Looks like Studio DEEN made a fourth show. They’re getting around this season
And hold the fuck up. How did we end up with a season where we have only two A-1 shows and 4 DEEN shows
B: Maybe they’re going all-out with Ace Attorney?
I hope it’s not Asterisk War they’re going all-out with.
Then there’s also Trigger’s short. I’m excited for this one.
C: I’m interested Luluco, Goma-chan looks cute, Onigiri looks stupid
B: I’m also a bit surprised that there’s a VN adaptation as a short.
C: So am I
B: As for movies and OVAs, the only thing I’m probably going to check out is Under the Dog since that one’s been so hyped.
C: Same here
B: Not the Yu-Gi-Oh movie?
But Chris, Yugi is battling Kaiba! No one’s ever seen that before! Don’t you want to see how that turns out?
C: Well that but I won’t be able to see it until it comes out on Blu-ray.
So technically it won’t be out until summer/fall so why talk about it during the spring season.
Also I can’t enter the contest to win a Exodia curry plate set SO WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT ANDY!
B: A curry plate? More like Exodia the intestine destroyer, amirite?
But just imagine serving up curry and shouting “Exodia, OBLITERATE!
B: So now that we’ve gone through the whole list, let’s do one more thing. I want the 5 shows you’re most excited for, any shows you think you’ll drop after 1 episode or less, and your bet for dark horse of the season.
B: And to make it interesting…no Hero Academia or JoJo.
B: Sorry, but it’d be too easy.
B: Mine are Ace Attorney, Sakamoto Desu Ga, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumoto Kedaruge, Mayoiga, and Kiznaiver.
C: Excited: Stray Dogs, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (in hopes of it being a hot mess), Mayoiga, Kiznaiver, and Sakamoto.
Dropping: Big Order, Hundred, Netoge no Yome, Sansha Sanyou
B: I’ve got the same drop list, minus Big Order and plus Shounen Maid and Super Lovers.
C: Dark Horse: I’m debating between DJ Agetarou and 12-sai
B: Since you said those two, I think I’m going to say Flying Witch. I don’t think it’d be too much of a surprise if it were good, but I think it has potential to end up being a big hit despite the low hype. More of a Barakamon type of dark horse than a Rakugo one.
That, or Unhappy.
All right, this has ended up being pretty long, but I hope you’ve stuck with it. Join us when the season actually starts to see what we end up dropping each week and to see just how wrong these predictions were.
